Intro to The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate

Kate loves to talk about what she is reading - when she is done reading, of course.  It is borderline impossible to get her to think, do or say anything else when she has a book in her hand (this isn't really a bad thing).  But for all the ability she showed with reading, her writing wasn't on par, and still isn't. To boost her practice with writing, I thought writing about books, from an 11 year old girl's perspective, would give her the chance to get her thoughts organized, share her passion(s) and give her more of an opportunity to get familiar with her computer - something that will be very important and useful for her as she enters 6th grade.
I love to read, and fortunately, am surrounded by readers.  Unfortunately, I haven't read as many of the truly important and influential writers and pieces of literature as I would have liked to have read; I do hope to remedy this in the near future.  What I have read mostly is historical fiction, works that tie in enough facts of an historical events to teach you something while combining a storyline that keeps me hooked and turning the pages.  I hate to admit how many nights I stayed up reading James Michener (at the expense of my school assignments), only to learn that Michener wasn't as important an author as I thought he was - at least to my 15 year old self.  But the historical facts underpinning his and many other books have stuck with me, and this genre still captures my reading attention.  Which brings me to The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate.
Kate and my wife Kelly had raved about The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, which the two of them first read about 3 years ago.  Kate loved Calpurnia, or Callie Vee, as she is called by her family.  After hearing Kate describe her, I was happy that she enjoyed the story of a strong, smart young lady so much; she sounded like a wonderful model and guide for Kate.  I also hoped that this story would cultivate an interest in the sciences in Kate to go along with her love of horses.
The back story of the book, of an only daughter of a fairly well-to-do Texas family at the end of the 19th century and her interest in the natural sciences as well as her family, captured my attention, as did the writing of the early chapters.  Despite my less than stellar literary exposures, I can identify good writing, and good sentences almost always capture my attention (I believe John Irving is a true master at writing sentences that just stay with you); I got that from the beginning of this book.  The writing also struck me as similar to the dialogue from the 2010 movie adaptation of True Grit, a move I liked which was also set in Texas at roughly the same time with similar aged narrators - maybe, in the future, I should actually read the Charles Portis novel as much has been written about Portis' writing in the novel.
I was also intrigued that Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species factored so prominently into the book. For all my reading, and my interest (but not strong aptitude) in sciences when I went to college, I have never read Darwin books and have found most mention of him in science coursework to be scant and cursory at best, which I now think is huge shame. Maybe, just maybe, through this blog, I could learn more of Darwin, and of my daughter.

Welcome to our blog - part two

Welcome to our blog.  My name is Rich and I'm excited to write about books with Kate.  She became such a good reader so quickly that, before you knew it, she was reading to herself and we didn't have as many opportunities to talk about what she was reading.  Now that she is reading books I'm interested in reading, this is a chance for us to both express ourselves and share our interests.  Hopefully, it may encourage others to begin talking about what they are reading and sharing their thoughts about many of the wonderful books out there today.
